My favourite basic bread
I’ve used this brown bread recipe in our bread maker for years - it makes a great, solid loaf that keeps well (not that it often lasts more than a couple of days before we’ve eaten it all). It supposedly is an old recipe from the Savoy Hotel in London.
This recipe is for a 1kg (2lb) loaf that most bread makers will produce. You can halve the recipe for a smaller loaf.
Ingredients:
3/4 of a cup of water
1/2 cup of milk
2 Eggs (free range of course)
4 Tablespoons of butter or cooking oil
1 teaspoon of salt
1 1/3 Tablespoons of sugar
2 cups of wholemeal flour
2 cups of high grade flour
4 teaspoons of yeast mixture (Edmonds surebake works well)
Put the ingredients into your bread maker in the order listed and use a wholemeal setting. Too easy!

I can vouch for this bread (and the soup below!) having tasted them both whilst experiencing Karen and John’s warm hospitality. Yum!
